Pub owner of five years, Wendy Fisher, says she wanted to do something to say thank you to the community for supporting the pub during the lockdowns.

"In lockdown we were making weekly food parcels and packed lunches for kids, and offered takeaways," she said.

"My daughter Kelly and my partner Julian did deliveries for the takeaways.

"Once the pub reopened we had to stop, but people were so supportive and it really kept us going over lockdown."

She added the pub has a lot of pensioners who visit so came up with the idea of offering hot soup and tea to them.

"They look after us, so it would be nice to give a little bit back.

"We're going to start off with soup and a roll and see how it goes.

"As it begins to get bitterly cold, we'll probably offer them a full lunch such as a stew or casserole."

The 54-year-old said herself, her daughter Kelly Tomsett - who is the manager - and her partner Julian Fisher want to be able to offer a warm place to those who need it.

She added: "So many people, even the other side of town offer to help if I ask.

"When I bought gazebos in the summer and asked if someone could help me build them, I was inundated with offers of help.

"People are just genuinely lovely and it's just a way of giving a little bit back.

"Even if people just come in and sit in here all afternoon to keep warm, I don't mind. It will save them putting on the heating at home."

The offer is on every Wednesday from noon until 3pm for over 65s.
