Ashford pool reopens as swimmers warned ‘water might be colder than usual’

A public swimming pool forced to shut due to heating problems has reopened today but water may be colder than usual.

Last week, Ashford’s Stour Centre announced two pools would be off limits until further notice after running into problems with temperature control.

Now, bosses at the Station Approach complex say its main swimming area has reopened but “temperatures may be slightly lower than normal”.

“We've got some fantastic news to kickstart your day – our main pool is making a grand reopening today at 6:30am for lane swimming! Get ready to dive into a world of aquatic fun and fitness right here at the Stour Centre,” they said.

“As we welcome you back with open arms, please be aware that the temperatures may be slightly lower than normal. But fear not, a refreshing swim is the perfect way to invigorate your senses and start your day on a positive note.”

The closure left those who often use the facilities hopeful the pools would reopen as soon as possible due to their popularity.

The Stour Centre underwent a £7.5 million refurbishment project in 2021 which left Labour Councillor Brendan Chilton feeling it was important any “ongoing maintenance issues” were ironed out as quickly as possible after finding out the facilities were out of action last week.

It is not known when the second pool could be back open.

Freedom Leisure, who run the site on behalf of Ashford Borough Council who own it have been approached for further comment.
