Two due in court over car crime raids

TWO of the men arrested in an investigation into car crime and burglary will appear before Dover magistrates today.

Stephen Davenport, 42, of Beacon Road, Lenham, is charged with conspiracy to commit burglary and Clyde Chapman, 35, of School Lane, Peasmarsh, faces counts of witness intimidation and conspiracy to commit burglary.

Today officers arrested a further two people in connection with the inquiry - a woman from East Sussex and a man from Maidstone, who have since been released on bail.

The second of two Ashford police officers arrested during the operation has been released on bail.

The man, who has not been named, was one of two people bailed last night pending further inquiries.

The other Ashford police officer was one of nine suspects released on bail on Wednesday.

In all, 15 people were arrested during the highly-secretive Operation Cameo, in which almost 400 police officers raided homes and businesses in Ashford, Woodchurch, Tenterden, Paddock Wood and Peasmarsh, East Sussex, in the early hours of Tuesday.

Cameo, led by Kent Police’s serious and organised crime unit, was 12-months in the planning and was set up to crack a suspected gang of car thieves and ringers operating in Kent.

So far £27,000 has been seized along with numerous vehicles and vehicle parts.
