Ashford United's former Rochester United striker Stuart Zanone says wins in Southern Counties East League are more important than records

Stuart Zanone says winning games is more important than breaking records.

The 30-goal Ashford United striker steps out against Sevenoaks Town at Homelands on Saturday, one game shy of beating his own achievement of scoring in 10 successive league games for Southern Counties East League rivals Rochester United two years ago.

Zanone, who scored twice in the 3-1 win against Corinthian on Tuesday night, said; “Nobody matched it the first time and to be on the verge of passing my own record is good. It feels better because I am enjoying my football more.

“If I score against Sevenoaks. it will be good but it’s all about getting the three points.”
He added: “I could and should have got a hat-trick on Tuesday night.

"I went round the keeper to score at Greenwich and tried to do it again but the lad stood up and I didn’t have it in my legs after Saturday’s game which was so tough.”

He added: “I was pleased with the penalty. I always place them but smashed a few in before the game and the lads told me to stick with it. Luckily we got one and I just blasted it.”

United are now third, still 11 points behind leaders Phoenix Sports and six adrift of second placed Erith & Belvedere, after the top-two also won on Tuesday night. Ashford still have to play Phoenix twice, while the Deres visit on Saturday week.

One blow for United is losing striker Andy Irvine, expected to be out for up to two months with damaged ankle ligaments.
