Heavy traffic in Canterbury due to closure of A2 between Wincheap and Brenley Corner

Drivers are being warned to expect lengthy delays to their journeys around Canterbury due to "extremely heavy traffic" brought about by the closure of the A2.

Bus operator Stagecoach says cancellations to its services are likely, while motorists heading into the city are facing half-hour hold-ups.

The traffic problems coincide with Pride Canterbury - the county's biggest celebration of the LGBTQ+ community - which is being hosted in the city this afternoon.

Long queues have built through Wincheap and Thanington due to the pre-planned closure of the London-bound A2.

The six-mile stretch between the Wincheap turn-off and Brenley Corner, for Faversham, is closed all weekend until 6am on Monday.

The pothole-ridden road is undergoing repair work for a number of consecutive weekends, with this weekend being the first of the London-bound closures.

An official 40-mile diversion route is in place, but drivers are trying to instead head through Canterbury to likely cut along the A290 at Blean.

The western city network may be snarled up, yet drivers who regularly use Broad Oak Road can now breathe a sigh of relief as the key route has at last reopened following an emergency closure.

It was shut eight days ago due to a ruptured water pipe and was closed between Vauxhall Road and Kingsmead Road while workmen from South East Water carried out repairs.

However, as of last night, the road has reopened.
