Amended timings for A28 Sturry crossing closure near Canterbury

Red faced county highway officials have corrected a notice which sparked widespread traffic concerns.

The KCC had published plans to close a busy level crossing on the A28 near Canterbury throughout Monday next week - the day the schools returned from the half term break.

It came in an announcement last night that the Sturry level crossing, which carries a huge volume of traffic, was being closed for urgent repairs from 12.15am on Monday, February 24 through to 4am the following day.

It would have had a huge affect on drivers heading in an out of Canterbury, with diversions and delays.

Now, more than 12 hours later, the KCC has issued an amended notice which significantly changes the timings and impact it will have.

It says the closure is planned from 11.45pm on Monday, February 24 through until Tuesday, February 25 at approximately 5am.

During those times, drivers will be diverted via Sturry Hill, through Broad Oak, rejoining the A28 via Vauxhall Road.

Specific on-site arrangements will be in place for pedestrians to use the crossing.

A Kent Highways spokesman said: "Unfortunately, the wrong timings initially went out which we have now corrected and we apologise for any inconvenience or concern it may have caused."
