Police spent an hour talking down a distressed student who was threatening to throw himself off St Augustine House in Canterbury on Sunday afternoon.

They were alerted by security staff at the Christ Church University building in Upper Bridge Street at around 5.25pm after the 20-year-old climbed over a glass balcony on the second floor.

Officers talked to the man and eventually persuaded him to return with them to the ground floor.

He was placed under section 136 of the Mental Health Act and taken to St Martin’s Hospital in Canterbury.
