Gough scores six in Canterbury win

Royston Gough had a game to remember - and Lydd Town a day to forget - after Canterbury thrashed them 9-1 in the Les Leckie Cup.

It was the second 9-1 hiding City have handed out to Lydd this season, and the sides are still to meet in their second league fixture of the campaign.

Gough’s pace caused the home defence problems throughout, and the huge workrate put in by the rest of the side ensured Town were chasing the game from the first whistle to the last.

It took City just five minutes to open the scoring when Lydd’s keeper somehow allowed Jamie Maxted’s shot to creep under his body.

Ten minutes later Gough made it 2-0, before Dave Read set him up for City’s third.

By half-time Gough already had the match ball after two more goals and City’s 5-0 lead was no less than their players deserved.

Canterbury’s skipper, Luke Lockhart, made it 6-0 and Gough headed home the seventh, before Lydd’s Kevin Bennett pulled a goal back for the home side.

Gough quickly restored City’s dominance after superb control from substitute Dan Bonneywell and Harry Gower completed the rout with a simple finish.

Canterbury: Wrench, Jackson, Lockhart, Hossick (Seager), Maxted (Boneywell), Tuite, McGeehan, Lawford (Smith), Gower, Read, Gough.
