Hockey skipper confident of medal in Madrid

CLEWLOW: "Madrid gives us a chance to finish the season on a high"

MEL CLEWLOW says Canterbury’s failure to book a European berth for next year has made them even more determined to make an impact when they travel out to Spain for their latest foreign adventure.

The decision to award European places only to the Slazenger English League's top two proved a costly one for Clewlow's side.

But they have a chance to finish the season with silverware by picking up a medal in the European Cup Winners' Cup tournament, which gets under way at the El Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, on April 8.

Both of Canterbury's previous Europe campaigns have yielded silver medals and Clewlow believes they can pick up another medal if they play to their potential, having been drawn in a group with Glasgow En-Croute Western (Scotland), Old Alexandra (Ireland) and Stadion Rot-Weiss Koln (Germany).

She said: "Missing out on a top two finish in the league was bitterly disappointing but Madrid gives us a chance to finish the season on a high.

"There will be a few nerves once we get there but most of the squad have played in Europe before so they know what to expect."
