The road was fully open by 8.30am, but the incident caused major disruption throughout the morning.

At one point, there were six-mile tailbacks for drivers, causing hour-long delays.

Congestion was stretching halfway back to J4 Orpington and on the A2 there were queues out of London from Bexley.

Long delays were also reported London-bound back to the M2 with heavy traffic either side back through Dartford and Greenhithe.

Traffic conditions had returned to normal by 12.30pm.
