Colouring competition winners got a sneak preview of a new £1.2million pirate-themed playground, which is set to launch next week.

The long-awaited opening of Buccaneer Bay, in Central Park, Dartford, will see people flock to the park for its 8m tall lighthouse, climbing frames and zip lines.

It will be open on Friday and Saturday with a free two-day ticketed grand opening, before being available to the general public from Monday, March 13.

Giveaways and pirate-themed activities, including a galleon, friendly animal-themed frames and quiet area will all be available.

Dartford council leader Jeremy Kite said: “The response we’ve had since announcing Buccaneer Bay last year has been amazing.

"Central Park is already a much loved destination for families, but this new attraction takes it to another level for everyone to enjoy.

“The transformation of this play area over the last few months has been inspiring to see, and we can’t wait to share it with families.”

Familiar features of Central Park’s play area like the zipline and splash are still in Buccaneer Bay, but have been given a revamp to fit the local authority's pirate theme.

The ticketed events come after a special sneak preview for colouring competition winners at the weekend.

Nadine Davis, from Greenhithe, brought her son Archie, 6, and his sister Sydnie, 3, along for an exclusive peek.

"It's amazing," she said. "So different to what it was like before. There is just so much to do. The kids are having a great time."

Archie added: "The whale climbing frame was my favourite because I can climb in and out so many different ways. And the lighthouse was so cool."

Over the past 12 months Dartford council has been working with Kompan on improving play spaces at Darenth Country Park, Hesketh Park, Jessamine Place, Queens Garden and at the Bridge Estate.

Stuart Pettit, regional sales manager from Kompan UK, said: “At Kompan UK, we are extremely proud to have been involved in this hugely exciting project.

"The vision of Dartford council to transform the playground at Central Park into the best in the UK was one that we relished, and it has been a pleasure to work in partnership with them.

“We look forward to welcoming children to this inclusive, exhilarating play space where they can unleash their imaginations and immerse themselves in a swashbuckling pirate adventure.”
