Tickets selling fast for Dartford Grammar School's Twelfth Night for the Shakespeare Schools Festival

Pupils at Dartford Grammar School (DGS) have been rehearsing for a production of Twelfth Night.

The comedy is the school’s way of marking the Shakespeare Schools Festival (SSF), the UK’s largest youth drama festival.

Schools perform half-hour versions of William Shakespeare’s plays in theatres across the country. At DGS 17 pupils from all year groups have teamed up to take part.

Director and drama teacher Tom Stevens said: “The SSF provides students with a unique opportunity to engage with Shakespeare on a smaller scale.

“The plays are stripped back to their essential components and are easily accessible for all ages. This helps to remind students about just why these plays have stood the test of time, with their universal themes and characters.”

If you’re new to the 400-year-old play, Twelfth Night follows Viola after she is separated from twin brother Sebastian in a shipwreck. From there she disguises herself as a youthful man named Cesario and eventually becomes embroiled in an unlikely love triangle.

The performance takes place at the Mick Jagger Centre (MJC) at the school in Shepherds Lane on Thursday.

Three other schools will also be performing, with the four 30 minute productions running from 7pm until 10pm.

Tickets are available from the MJC box office, priced £9 for adults, £7 for concessions, or for £6.50 each when buying 20 or more. Book by calling 01322 291100.
