Valley View: Charlton Athletic goalkeeper Ben Hamer writes for the KM Group

The big question on Saturday was whether the ball crossed the Charlton goalline – and I suppose I’m the best-placed person to answer!

The pivotal moment of our match against Exeter was Daniel Nardiello’s shot, which rolled agonisingly slowly toward the goalline.

I slipped as I went to retrieve the ball and had I not done so, I would have got to the ball easily before it got close to the line and we wouldn’t be having these conversations.

I arrived just as it crossed the line. Now, as every schoolboy will tell you, the whole of the ball has to cross the line before a goal is awarded and I don’t think it did.

You’ll all have seen the pictures, no doubt but I thought I got there in time. It was a bit over, I must admit but I thought I kept it out and half the ball was on the line.

Obviously, Nardiello disagreed and Nards, whom I know well from my time on loan at Exeter last season, later took out his frustration on the linesman. When he was sent-off, the ball was in our court.

I thought Exeter worked ever so hard but it was a long time to play with 10 players and the key for us was to remain patient.

I know fans can get frustrated when the ball doesn’t go forward quickly but it’s all about moving the opposition defence around, dragging players out of position and tiring them out.

We did that well and although no one would claim it was a vintage performance, it was a professional one.

I got my first clean sheet as well, so I’ve got no complaints.

We mustn’t forget the ‘goal’ that Chris Solly scored as well. He was unfortunate – he hit his shot so well that it crashed off the bottom off the bar and down at such pace that no one saw it bounced behind the line.

I’m enjoying life at Charlton and it was an easy decision to move over the summer. I’d become third choice at Reading and Charlton are an attractive proposition.

We’re looking to gain promotion this season, so although it was disappointing when we were knocked out of the Carling Cup by Preston in midweek, there is no question what our priority is.

The fact that we went top of the table the same night probably illustrates the point and we have to maintain that at Rochdale on Saturday.
