Montell Douglas of Blackheath & Bromley AC has written her name into athletics history by breaking the longest-standing British track record as well as securing an individual spot in the Beijing Olympics.

While competing at the Loughborough European Athletics Permit meeting on Thursday, Douglas ran the 100m in 11.05secs - with a legal wind mark of +2.0m/s - beating the previous record of 11.10 held by Kathy Cook since 1981.

Douglas said: "My mum said to me this week, 'Fly like a bird' and my physio said, 'Run like the wind'. Those two sayings have been going round my head all day and I managed to do them. I feel amazing."

The 22-year-old, whose previous personal best was 11.28, was competing to secure a place in the 100m Olympic GB team after making the relay squad.

Her wind-assisted, hence unofficial, time of 10.95 in the Loughborough heats suggested something was in the air and then, in the final, she set the new record and claimed her individual 100m Olympics place.
