Dartford boss Alan Dowson admits Sam Odaudu’s absence has hit his team hard as versatile young defender nears a return

Sam Odaudu’s absence has hit Dartford hard, according to manager Alan Dowson.

The Academy product, a versatile defender, has been out with a knee injury since Boxing Day at Ebbsfleet.

Dowson tipped him to play in the Football League one day - after just one league game - before the first major setback of his senior career.

But Odaudu’s now close to a return and Dowson cannot wait to welcome him back.

He said: “Sam Odaudu is not far away.

“We’re not far away from being full strength. The back four has not been the same without him.

“Since he came out, we have conceded a lot of goals. He’s the best one-versus-one defender at the club.

“That’s a lot of pressure on young shoulders but, since he has been out, the team have conceded a lot.”

Striker Charlie Sheringham isn’t far away from his injury comeback, either, while midfielders Luke Allen (injury) and Samir Carruthers (suspension) are both available again.

On Allen, Dowson said: “He does get these injuries but, on the pitch, he’s got that magic.

“So does Samir Carruthers, as well.

"Hopefully, we will be all right.”

While these players are coming back, Dowson also wants to bolster his ranks as they aim to cement their place in the National League South play-offs.

“Defensively and attacking-wise to be honest,” he replied when asked what areas he wants to strengthen in.

“I think we need to do that.

“I was hoping to get a couple done before Tuesday night [a 1-1 draw at Hungerford]. We’re working very hard to get some done, to be honest.

“We’re trying to get people that have played in this league and above. We have lost out on players at Dartford because of budgets and stuff like that.

“But we have to work hard and that’s what we’ll do.”
