A teenage thug who killed a man by striking him with a broom is starting a life sentence after a jury convicted him of murder.

Shane Penfold was told he would have to serve a minimum of 13 years before he would be considered for parole.

Judge Andrew Patience QC told the 19-year-old: "You thought nothing of Marc Brown but left him, as we now know, grievously injured and thought only of yourself.

"You left the scene and subsequently boasted and demonstrated to others what you had done."

Maidstone Crown Court heard Penfold chased the 23-year-old victim from a party in Great Mongeham, Deal, into a garden on August 15 last year, believing he had thrown a bottle or glass at his friend.

Penfold picked up a heavy broom and struck out at Mr Brown as he tried to hide in the darkness.

The victim was found staggering around and it was thought for some time that he was merely drunk.

He was taken to hospital, where it was eventually realised he had suffered a fractured skull. He was rushed to a London hospital for emergency surgery, but died six days later.

Penfold, of Adelaide Road, Elvington, denied murder but was convicted by a 10-2 majority. He was acquitted of perverting the course of justice.

A moving impact statement by the victim's mother Sarah, in which she told of her heartbreak, was read to the court.
