WINNER: Jamie Friend

DEAL soldier Jamie Friend has won the Army’s indoor tennis tournament. Cpl Friend, of 14 Transport Squadron, Royal Logistics Corps, came out on top in the two-day tournament at Aldershot.

Friend, has been playing tennis since he was 13 and was the second seed in this year’s tournament.

He said: “I joined the Walmer club as a kid and just kept on playing. I’m seeded number two in the Army at the moment.”

“I prefer playing indoors because you’re more protected from the elements and get a good, even bounce. It can be difficult to train this time of year but I try to keep the fitness side going.”

Friend, a former pupil of Castle High School, joined the Army in 1992 and is now serving in Germany as a driver.
