National Highways says drivers can expect severe delays of up to 90 minutes, with queues stretching right back towards Junction 5 at Sittingbourne.

Three fire engines were sent to the scene, and crews helped one person from a car. They were then passed into the care of SECAmb paramedics.

Firefighters left the area just after 6pm.

The police and ambulance services have been contacted for further details.

Elsewhere in the county, the M20 remains shut coastbound between Junction 10a at Ashford and Junction 11 for Hythe.

A crash that resulted in a huge fuel spillage means the route is likely to remain shut into the early hours for resurfacing.
