A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "Thanks to a working smoke alarm the young lady and her son were able to get out and wait with a neighbour so no one was injured.

"We think it started due to a build up of grease on the cooker so we would therefore urge people to keep their cookers clean and make sure they have a working smoke alarm."

Firefighters spent one hour at the property and used breathing apparatus, a hose reel and a fan to clear the smoke.
