There was a noticeable police presence in a town centre over fears of a ‘mob’ which was advertised on social media.

Anyone wearing a face covering can be asked to take it off after a dispersal order was issued, starting tonight.

Officers have extra powers in Gravesend which means they can ask anyone they believe to be wearing a mask or veil for the purpose of committing a crime to remove it.

However, there was already an increased number of officers in the town centre this afternoon, with cars parked outside Primark and Tesco in New Road, the main pedestrianised area through town.

It came after messages were circulated on Snapchat encouraging people to meet in Gravesend at 3pm for a “robbery”.

As 3pm approached, Vodafone had shut, as had the Cancer Research shop and O2.

Police and several security guards were positioned around the entrance to Tesco.

London’s Oxford Street and Southend in Essex have seen trouble in recent days after large groups of youths were encouraged online to visit the areas.

A woman was arrested and led away by police after allegedly being rude to officers.

The dispersal order is being implemented alongside additional stop-and-search powers for constables from 8pm until 10am tomorrow (August 11).

Police can also ask anyone causing a nuisance to leave the area and, if necessary, arrest those who may return.

Superintendent Nick Sparkes said: “Our response will be robust and anyone found to be involved in an offence will be swiftly brought to justice.

“Visitors to Gravesend town centre will see more patrols in the area working to keep residents, shoppers and businesses safe.”
