A fire broke out in a tower block in Gravesend.

It happened around lunchtime in a flat in Gravesham Court, in Parrock Street.

Fire crews said nobody was in the fourth floor flat when the fire started and described it as a small incident.

Crew manager Ray Kilbourne said: "It looked like a newspaper had been left near a hob, which may have been on. The details at the moment are sketchy but somehow the paper caught fire and smoke logged the flat."

Gravesham Court is managed by Gravesham council and a smoke alarm fitted in the flat that triggered the block's communal smoke alarm.

Fire crews added that while some residents heard the alarm sounding and left the building, others remained in their flats. Everyone was evacuated as soon as Kent Fire and Rescue Service arrived.

At first five fire engines were sent to the scene, but this was later downgraded to two fire crews and two engines.
