Service for victims of Paris terrorist attacks held in Community Square, Gravesend

More than 100 people gathered in Gravesend to pay their respects to the victims of the tragic Paris terror attacks.

A service to the 132 murdered in the French capital was impeccably observed in the town's community square on Monday morning.

Gravesham mayor, Cllr Mick Wenban, read a short statement titled ‘Nous sommes Paris’ before a minute’s silence was observed, at 11 o’clock.

This was followed by a prayer from the mayor’s chaplain and associate priest at Christ Church, Gravesend, Rev Jacqueline Littlewood.

The French tricolour flew at half-mast alongside the Union Flag and there was a solemn atmosphere outside the Civic Centre, but also one of resolve, as people spoke of support for the French people.

Addressing the crowd, Cllr Wenban said: ”Some things are beyond words. The horrible atrocities visited on Paris at the weekend have shocked us all.

"So silence is our best way of showing our respect, our support and our solidarity with all those families touched by the outrage. We are thinking of them.”

Gravesend’s service was one of many across the county that commemorated the victims of Friday’s attacks by Islamic extremist group ISIS, which also left 352 wounded.

The largest number of casualties was at the Bataclan concert venue where four gunmen killed at least 89 people.

In Maidstone, a minute’s silence was marked around the town and shoppers at The Mall were among those taking part in the Europe-wide mark of remembrance, at 11am.

Staff at Maidstone Borough Council also took a moment to remember the victims while in Medway, the flags at the council’s offices in Dock Road, Chatham, are flying at half mast.
