A new skatepark has
opened in Gravesend

by Rachel Hovenden

A skatepark, the brainchild of local youngsters, opened
with a BMX and skateboard display yesterday.

Gravesend youngsters came up with the idea three years ago
after they kept getting moved on from car parks when
there was nowhere else for them to go.

The youngsters raised almost £7,000 towards the £170,000 cost,
with the rest coming from Gravesham council.

Professional skaters provided workshops and demonstrations
throughout the afternoon, and dozens of young people turned out to
try out the new skatepark in Ordnance Road, Gravesend.

Cllr John Burden, said: "This is a magnificent facility which we
hope the youngsters will enjoy - and can enjoy all the more because
they have contributed so much. Raising such a sum of money in these
difficult times is no mean feat."
