Dover celebrates freight record

THE Port of Dover handled record freight in 2004.

The port processed 1,980,662 trucks on its services to Calais and Dunkirk, 11 per cent up on 2003. It now has 61 per cent of the freight business using the two terminals.

In the tourist vehicle market, Dover processed 14,333,663 passengers and 2,506,667 tourist vehicles which was only marginally fewer than in 2003.

The number of coach journeys through the port increased by two per cent to 128,464. Dover now has 67 per cent of the coach business and 55 per cent of the tourist vehicle business between the two terminals.

"The port and its ferry services continue to be the number one choice," said chief executive Bob Goldfield.
