Own goal for city pub?

CANTERBURY licensing officer PC Jim Ratchford has confirmed that one pub is being investigated after allegations that it opened early for England's World Cup match on Sunday.

He said: "There are allegations that the premises opened before it was entitled to, and we will be interviewing the licensees."

PC Ratchford refused to say which pub the allegations concerned, but said that was the only problem he was aware of caused by early opening at the weekend.

"With the England match and the jubilee bank holiday pubs were allowed to stay open until midnight, and 1am on Monday," he said.

"I like to think it went nicely and was a great weekend for everybody."

More than 30 pubs in the district have been granted permission for special opening hours to coincide with World Cup matches, but more are expected to apply should England make the finals.
