Alan Julian believes he is ready to emerge from the shadow of Simon Royce and claim the first team goalkeeping jersey.

Gillingham manager Mark Stimson is facing a difficult choice between Julian and last season’s regular Royce and he’ll field his preferred man on Sunday for the game against Crystal Palace.

Julian joined the Gills from Stevenage last summer and after just a handful of games in his first season is itching to make his mark at the club.

"I’ve been here for a year and I’ve listened and I’ve tried to learn and I think I’m ready and hopefully the gaffer puts me in," said Julian.

"Last year when I came in during pre-season I didn’t play too many games. Royce had the shirt and he was fantastic the year before and so I didn’t really expect to be playing.

"This year he’s given me a fair crack. I’m 26 and so I really do feel that the time is right for me to get in but that’s the gaffer’s decision. I hope it’s me but if it’s not then I’ll wish Royce all the best. He’s a fantastic goalkeeper and I just have to keep working hard and try and push him.

"I played six games last year. I did all right but you have to do it over a longer period of time to earn your right. If it goes on hard work then I think I’ve earned my right but nothing is won on hard work, you have to go on the pitch and do it."
