Bogus caller steals elderly lady's cash

A 91-year-old woman was the victim of a distraction burglary when a man came to her door pretending to bring her a food hamper from a supermarket.

The elderly woman was told she had been selected to receive the hamper when the offender called at her Whitstable home at 11am on Wednesday.

He went through the contents of the hamper with her, before asking to use the toilet and leaving the property, taking the basket with him.

The next day the woman found £90 missing.

The man is described as aged in his late 50s and of stocky build. He had grey hair and was wearing a light-coloured suit.

Det Insp Nick Gossett said: "It is particular nasty when you come across this offence where a thief steals from an elderly person after tricking their way into a house."
