Westgate teenager Jessica Wales is praying 2009 will be a life-saving year, as time runs out for her to receive the double lung transplant she desperately needs.

The 19-year-old requires a constant stream of oxygen, an endless supply of antibiotics and regular trips to a London hospital as she battles cystic fibrosis.

Jessica, who was diagnosed with the disease at just four months old, has been waiting for a new pair of lungs for more than three years.

The remarkable youngster has already beaten her terrifying two-year prognosis, but is frightened she could lose her battle in the next 12 months.

She said: “Recently, my lungs have become so bad that I can hardly do anything. I’m always breathless and get panicky.

“I’m trying to stay positive but it’s hard to think about what next year might bring.

“I’m only 19 and I haven’t lived yet. I just want the chance to go and live my life like anyone else my age.”

Although 16 million people - a quarter of the UK population - have said they want to help others after their death by joining the NHS Organ Donor Register, an eighth of the 8,000 people registered for a transplant will die while waiting.

Despite her condition, Jessica has courageously campaigned for people to give the gift of life. She recently featured on Noel’s HQ on Sky1, which motivated around 2,000 people to sign the organ donor register in a single night.

Lynda Hamlyn, chief executive of NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “At this time of year we all look back and wonder if we could have achieved more.

“If you’re making resolutions for the year ahead, please consider whether you could make joining the register part of your own intentions for 2009.”
