Two sport-loving Islanders are taking part in a Kent County Council drive to get children enjoying exercise.

Claire Hales and Jayne Stupple, both from Minster, are being trained in ‘specialist PE’ by experts from Canterbury Christ Church University.

Both Claire and Jayne work at schools on the Island and are currently undertaking a foundation degree in childhood studies with PE at the university, which aims to improve PE expertise in schools.

The degree provides a formal qualification and an opportunity to continue their studies if they wish to go on to become fully qualified teachers.

Claire, 35, said: “When I was at school I always wanted to be a PE teacher.

“Too many children sit in front of computer games and do not get involved in sport. I hope to help young people develop a passion for sports from an early age.”

The programme consists of 12 courses of two years and as well as PE studies, students will also study communication, literacy, inclusion, behaviour for learning and creativity.

Jayne added: “I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching PE to the children.

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to participate in the programme because it enhances my existing skills.”
