Stalwart Damon Garwood bowed out in winning style on Sunday after a successful 13-year career with Holcombe Hockey Club.

The 32-year-old midfielder, who joined the Rochester club in 1999, retired after helping Holcombe beat Harleston Magpies 5-0.

The victory meant Holcombe finished fourth in Men’s Conference East and Garwood (pictured in red) said: "It’s a good time to call it a day because the club are in a good place at the moment.

"Although we have won six or seven titles during my time here, the team we have had this year is probably the best side we have ever put out. For me it’s just the right moment to spend more time with my family."

Garwood had planned to retire at the end of last season but decided to carry on playing for another year because of the influence of Holcs coach Julian Halls, the former Great Britain Olympic player who arrived at Holcombe Park in 2010.

"I have loved every minute of being part of Julian’s squad for the past two seasons," Garwood said.

"He has a brought a real ethos and enjoyment to the whole squad and if anyone is capable of realising the club’s ambitions, then it’s Julian.

"Although we finished in fourth place, we were better than that. Our performances were first class in the second half of the season."
