An investigation has begun after a derelict house burnt down on an estate in Gravesend.

Firefighters from across the county were called out to Christianfields Avenue, at about 8.30pm on Saturday where they found the empty house well alight.

Crews from Thames-side, Dartford, Medway, Strood and Halling, were sent to the Kings Farm estate to stop the flames spreading to other empty properties and at the height of the flames there were six pumps and a height vehicle at the scene trying to put the fire out.

It was deemed too dangerous to fight from inside the property, so crews used the height ladder to fight it from above.

Other firefighters entered empty homes next to the burning house to help stop the flames spreading any further.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, said: "As we arrived we could see the flames were just about to come through the roof.

"We entered other properties to stop the fire from spreading and managed stop that happening.

"A short while later the roof completely collapsed and we spent another two hours or so bringing the fire under control.

"The house was completely destroyed in the fire, which was started deliberately, as the properties were boarded up waiting to be demolished.

"Someone had got in and started the fire and we left the scene with the police after about two-and-a-half hours."
