DNA trawl in hunt for rapist

POLICE have launched a DNA sweep in the Rainham area to try to track down a rapist who struck seven years ago.

Officers have been visiting the homes of 190 cab drivers, nightclub bouncers and workers who were working late on an unspecified date in 1996.

The rape took place in Edwin Road and special constables have been visiting homes of the men working that night to eliminate them from their inquiries.

Cotton buds were used to take saliva samples to try and provide a DNA match with the attacker.

They also plan to visit known sex offenders in the area to carry out the same tests.

A police spokesman said: "This is a case that has been reviewed and the investigation is currently ongoing."
