A man killed his girlfriend in a drunken fit of anger in an alleyway near their home, a court heard.

Susie Smith suffered fatal internal injuries from being kicked in the abdomen by Steven Brooker.

The mother-of-six and grandmother was taken to the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford but died soon afterwards.

Maidstone Crown Court heard as a witness asked Miss Smith, 50, if she wanted medical help in the alley, Brooker said: "If you call an ambulance, I am going to prison."

Brooker denies murder but admits manslaughter.

The 42-year-old and Miss Smith, also known as Beaney, had been together for three or four years and lived in a flat at Waterman House, Godfrey Road, Ashford.

Deepak Kapur, prosecuting, said both were heavy drinkers who rowed regularly.

On April 29, Miss Smith had been out in the day and was "the worse for wear" when she went to a post office in Tufton Street.

Mr Kapur said she fell over a few times and an ambulance was called. She admitted she had drunk a can of strong lager and a bottle of cider.

When she returned home Brooker was annoyed because she had been gone so long.

"For whatever reason, an argument started," said the prosecutor. "Susie Smith was assaulted.

"The dispute poured out into the alleyway. Her hair was forcibly pulled out."

A schoolgirl heard drunken shouting and swearing from her home in Christchurch Road and voice say: "That's right, you collapse."

Mr Kapur said it was then that Brooker kicked Miss Smith. The girl heard a thump and a scrape.

Her mother heard Brooker say: "This is going to be Abh or Gbh or something is it?"

Mr Kapur told jurors: "We say he did it all in a violent rage.

"He deliberately struck her down, deliberately kicked her with at least the intention to do grievous bodily harm."

The trial continues.
