A BLOCKED sewer plunged a family into a nightmare as their home filled with human waste.

Young mother Julie Bass was about to leave for work, leaving her own mother, Kathleen, to look after seven-year-old son Jesus, when raw sewage started to pour into the house.

Torrential rain had lifted up the manhole cover in the garden of the property in Chamberlain Road, Luton, Chatham, releasing the sewage packed inside.

“It was shocking,” said Julie, 36. “It poured thought the air vents in the walls and was seeping into my kitchen.

“My mum, me and Jesus were distraught. It was shocking. My washing was ruined, my kitchen flooring has been destroyed and the vents underneath the house are still apparently full with sewage, it’s been treated, but is damp and is now causing my laminate flooring to rise.”

Julie and her husband Paul discovered the blocked sewer when they noticed a nasty smell in their back garden.

Paul lifted the manhole cover to see if there was a problem. “The waste was just an inch from the top of the cover when we opened it,” he said.

Julie said Southern Water told her it was the responsibility of Medway Council

“I rang the council and they told me it was not theirs either, I kept being pushed from pillar to post, and wasn’t getting anywhere,” she said.

Finally, the couple decided to contact the Environment Agency, who sent a representative round to see could be done about the problem.

Julie added: “She told Southern Water to come and unblock it as it turned out it was their responsibility.”

The family spent a night in a hotel while the mess was being sorted out but then decided to return home.
