Gillingham chairman Paul Scally has backed teenage midfielder Jack Payne to one day grace the Premier League.

Payne (pictured) has turned in a string of impressive performances since progressing through the club’s youth ranks and is a key part of manager Andy Hessenthaler’s plans this season.

"He will play in the Premier League for sure, there is no question about that," said Mr Scally.

"Jack is destined for great things and good luck to him as he is a smashing lad.

"Everything about his attitude and professionalism is spot on."

Speculation has already begun about the 18-year-old’s future but the Gills are hopeful of seeing plenty more of him before he moves on.

Mr Scally added: "Jack is learning his game and he is happy where he is. I’m just pleased he is playing well and hopefully he gets us promotion and then maybe another promotion.

"He has everything that a top quality player should have at a young age."
