Gillingham were awaiting the outcome of scans on Danny Spiller's foot after the midfielder suffered a suspected fracture on Saturday.

Spiller (pictured), who has missed just three games this season, was sent to hospital for an x-ray of his metatarsal immediately after Saturday’s win over Northampton.

"He has a big swelling on top of his foot," Hessenthaler said on Saturday.

"He has kicked the bottom of one of their player’s boots and he has heavy swelling that came up quite quickly. Whether they can detect anything, who knows, we’ll have to wait and see.

"That will be very sore and let’s just hope he hasn’t broken anything."

The bone is on the top of the foot and there have been high-profile injuries affecting both David Beckham and Wayne Rooney in recent years.

"It’s always a dangerous area and we have all seen over the years that those metatarsals can go now," added Hessenthaler.

"I think personally it’s the make of the boots now that can cause the problem. Years ago we didn’t really hear about metatarsals. We’ll keep our fingers crossed he’ll be okay."
