Gillingham have released five players including Danny Spiller and Curtis Weston after failure to reach the League 2 play-offs.

Defender Matt Lawrence, forward Dennis Oli and midfielder Dean Rance have also left Priestfield after not being offered new deals by the club.

Club captain Lawrence made 27 starts for the Gills this season with a further two appearances off the bench.

The 37-year-old started 68 games in his two seasons at Priestfield after joining from Crystal Palace.

Weston, 25, made 35 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals last season and made 147 starts, scoring 19 goals in all after joining the club four years ago.

Spiller (pictured) made seven starts and nine sub appearances, scoring twice, last season.

In his second spell with the club he scored four goals in 49 appearances over two seasons after signing from Dagenham & Redbridge.

The 30-year-old previously played 138 games with the Gills after coming through the youth ranks, scoring six goals before joining Millwall in 2007.

Spiller said on twitter: "Thank you and goodbye to all my Gills followers. Truly loved my time and the fans."

Oli, 28, scored two goals in 27 appearances - 23 of them as a sub - last season and bagged 15 goals after joining in November 2007.

Youth team product Rance, who turns 21 on Monday, made his only Gills appearance off the bench in an FA Cup game this season.

Rance tweeted: "I've had a great 12 years at the club, enjoyed every minute. Wish Gills all the best for next season. I'm excited for the fresh challenge. I'll be back."

A Gills spokesman said: "The club thanks all five for all of their efforts for the club and wishes them well for the future."

Decisions on several other players who are out of contract have been deferred following the departure of manager Andy Hessenthaler on Tuesday.

Among those is Simon King who tweeted: "Still a bit up in the air but should know more in couple of weeks."

Player-of-the-year Danny Jackman added: "Will find out about whether I've got a contract or not soon I would imagine."
