Kent’s new head coach Jimmy Adams sees the key ingredient to success with the county as discipline.

The 44-year-old took up his post at St Lawrence last week and has been getting to know the squad as they go through their pre-season training schedule in the nets at Canterbury.

"There are some players here, while others are overseas or with the England under-19s," he said. "Matt Coles has been away with the Lions while a couple are in Bangladesh in the BPL. I am happy with the group that are here, it’s a case of getting into the flow and starting a process of getting people thinking about what could be a huge season for us.

"The older guys I know having watched quite a few of them over the years, such as James Tredwell, Geraint Jones and obviously Rob Key. A lot of the younger guys I don’t know too well but I will have to get to know them."

"Building relationships is the key thing initially. You want to get to a point where there is mutual trust because I do think at elite level when you are asking players to work and think close to the edge, there is a certain level of trust and it becomes easier to do when you have that trust.

Adams inherits a squad that have struggled for the past two seasons and finished second bottom in LV= County Championship Division 2 last year. The new head coach is under no illusions as to the task in hand, but believes instilling a sense of discipline from the start will help build the foundations for the future.

"I would like to see the game played with a certain amount of discipline. It’s a pretty wide-ranging word but for me it will help how we think as individuals and collectively.

"Whether you break it down ball by ball, session by session or month by month, I think if we create an environment where we are consistently making good decisions that allows people’s ability and talent to shine."
