Uncapped Kent off-spinner James Tredwell has been added to the England Test squad for the tour of South Africa.

The 27-year-old will act as cover for fellow spinner Graeme Swann, who has a side injury.

England team director Andy Flower said: “Graeme’s injury is improving and we expect him to be available for the first Test starting on Wednesday but with a further three matches to come after Centurion, we have decided that we need a ‘like-for-like’ replacement on hand for Graeme should this be required later in the tour.”

Tredwell, who was also called up to the England one-day squad earlier during the tour, played for the England Performance Programme in their practice match against Nashua Titans last week, making 70 in the first innings.
