A man has died after falling from the M2 bridge.

The emergency services were called to the River Medway, near Cuxton, at 11.30am after reports of a person in the water.

The RAF search and rescue helicopter was dispatched to help locate the man but was stood down when his body was found.

The police, Kent Fire and Rescue Service, the coastguard and the Sheerness inshore lifeboat crew were also at the scene.

The speed limit on the motorway was reduced to 50mph in both directions while the search was carried out.

The man’s body was recovered at about midday and taken to the Medway Bridge Marina.

A witness said they thought the man was wearing a high-visibilty jacket.
