Mark McCammon insists he can be the man to replace injured striker Adebayo Akinfenwa this weekend.

With Akinfenwa struggling through injury and McCammon back fit and available, he is determined to show what he can do.

"If Bayo isn’t playing, then I’m ready and will rise to the challenge," said the 32-year-old.

"I’ve got all the attributes needed to replace him and unfortunately, because of injuries, I’ve been unable to show what I can do.

"If I get the opportunity I have to take it with both hands. I want to show all those doubters what I’m capable of."

McCammon is all too aware that he has his critics among Gillingham fans but is determined not to let them get to him as he strives to make an impact.

He has yet to start a game in League 2 so far this season, with his four appearances coming from the bench.

On Saturday he came on and put in a decent display against Stockport, before scoring from the spot in the reserves on Wednesday afternoon. "The supporters pay the players’ wages and so they are entitled to their opinion," said McCammon.

"I’ve had a lot of injuries and not had a run of seven or eight games to show what I can do. When I did have a run last season, I got a player-of-the-month award.

"I’m feeling good and confident. Negative comments from supporters don’t affect me because I’m a strong person. People shout abuse but you have to rise above it."
