A north Kent pub has become the toast of the town, after winning a top gong at the Great British Pub Awards.

The Fighting Cocks in Horton Kirby, has been crowned Best Tenanted or Leased Pub in the country at the industry’s ‘Oscars’ – beating off competition from all over Britain.

Judge Peter Grieve said the watering hole stood out from the rest of the shortlist.

“It offers everything you look for in a great pub,” he said. “It’s got quality food and drink, a welcoming atmosphere and high standards throughout.”

It’s a great tribute to licensee Chris Maskery, who took over the business two years ago as a novice landlord.

Despite the difficulties facing the industry, he’s generated a 60 per cent increase in sales over the last year after a ‘top to toe’ refurbishment.

Collecting his trophy he said: “Winning this award is a fantastic endorsement of all the work we’ve put into the pub.

“We’re thrilled to bits - and grateful for the support of our staff and customers who have helped us achieve this.”
