Rail station blaze delays commuters

KENT commuters faced massive delays following a fire at London Bridge station last night.

The station was closed to trains for two hours as thousands of customers struggled to find alternative ways home.

The fire was discovered underneath platform four at about 6.45pm and the entire station was evacuated.

Connex spokesman Sarah Boundy said: "It caused vast disruption. The bulk of our trains at peak times run through London Bridge and they were severely delayed. Anyone travelling through that station was affected."

Firefighters were called out to tackle the blaze and they and police officers evacuated the station.

Trains were diverted to Cannon Street and passengers also travelled to Victoria and Blackfriars station for alternative routes.

London Buses and London Underground and Docklands Light Railway honoured Connex tickets of the mass of passengers struggling to find other ways home.

The station was reopened at 9pm and platforms three and four remained closed until a full service was resumed by 10pm.
