Roadside checks were carried out on Monday in a bid to crackdown on the dumping of illegal waste.

Maidstone council and other agencies were on the A249 Detling Hill by the Kent Showground from 7am to 11am.

The aim of the operation was to catch people who may be flytipping and to weed out any unregistered waste carriers but drivers were also checked in the fight against benefit fraud, vehicle defects, unlicensed drivers and untaxed vehicles.

Failing to register as a waste carrier can land an operator with a fine of up to £5,000. To find out how to register, either as a householder or as someone who carries waste for other people log onto www.defra.gov.uk/environment/waste/legislation/duty.htm.
