School reunion

A FASCINATING glimpse into school life from the 1960s has paved the way for a reunion.

The event to mark the closure of Senacre Technology College in Maidstone will be held tonight.

In preparation, former science teacher Alan Tucker rooted out dozens of pictures from his seven years at the school.

Mr Tucker, now of Launceston in Cornwall, had his first teaching job at Senacre between 1959 and 1966.

His days there were particularly memorable because he met his wife of 44 years Yvonne there, while she was a pupil.

Pictures in his collection include science lessons, where pupils concentrate on lighting and working with bunsen burners, sports events and school trips.

There are also snaps taken inside the hallowed walls of the staff room, and of pupils enjoying break time and lessons.

Mr Tucker, who taught under head of science, Frank Barker, said: “I just thought it would be good to take pictures every now and then. If something out of the ordinary happens, you think it would be good to record it.

“Now, of course, there are lots of pictures that I wish I had taken, too.”

Mr and Mrs Tucker are among more than 400 people expected to attend the event.

The Senacre site, which closed to pupils in May, will make way for housing, with money from the sale of the school going towards funding the New Line Learning Academy on the former Oldborough site in Boughton Lane.
