A helicopter search has been called off after rescuers failed to find an occupant of an overturned kayak.

Thames Coastguard said the RAF search and rescue helicopter and lifeboats had been out looking off Warden Point, Sheppey, after they were alerted to an overturned kayak about a mile off Leysdown.

But the search was called off as nothing untoward was found.

According to the spokesman, the kayak had been there for some time.

The search was conducted to ensure there was no one in the water.
