All but one of the 14 people taken to hospital yesterday after a multi-car pile-up on Sheppey's bridges have been released.

The chaos started just after 8am, when five cars crashed trying to avoid a broken-down Vauxhall Corsa in the fast lane of the new Sheppey Crossing.

The second accident came when a Hyundai and a VW Passat hit head on on the Kingsferry Bridge about half an hour later.

Then, three more crashes came as cars were stuck in traffic on that bridge.

The injured

* A 49-year-old Sheerness woman in the first accident was cut free by firefighters and taken to Medway Maritime Hospital on a long board with potential spinal injuries. She was treated in hospital for a fractured left arm and is being discharged today.

* Three youngsters in a taxi were taken to Medway Maritime Hospital as a precaution

* Nine others from the first crash were taken to Medway - five on long boards - all 12 were discharged from hospital yesterday.

* In the second crash, the Hyundai driver, a 48-year-old woman from the Iwade area, was cut free and is being treated in hospital for leg injuries and a broken collarbone.
