Siege man threatens to set house alight

POLICE were called after reports that a man had barricaded himself inside a house and was threatening to set it on fire.

The man, in his 30s, shut himself in for several hours in the drama at Yorkland Avenue, Welling, yesterday.

Police say two neighbours were taken to the safety of a nearby community centre.

Officers also sealed off part of the street along with Gloucester and Somerset Avenues.

Two fire engines, from the Bexley and Erith stations, were kept on standby in case a fire did occur.

A man was later arrested on suspicion of threats to caused criminal damage. He remained in custody today.
