Gillingham keeper Simon Royce will start contract talks with manager Mark Stimson on Tuesday.

Veteran Royce, who has enjoyed a magnificent season, kept another clean sheet as Gills edged the play-off final in the last minute.

It means League 1 football at Priestfield next season but Royce revealed he is unsure whether he is going to be part of it or not.

"We’re going to have a chat on Tuesday," said Royce. "(Staying at) Gillingham is my number one choice. I’m hoping it’s not my last game for Gillingham.

"I’m not confident that there will be something for me, but I think promotion has helped a little bit.

"The manager has kept faith in me so I’m pleased, and I’m waiting to see what happens next year.

"If it doesn’t happen then there won’t be any sour grapes. I’ll be going out on a high. How bad is that – a clean sheet at Wembley and a bit of silverware."

If Royce doesn’t stay at Priestfield, he is still keen to stay in the game and believes he can carry on playing until he is 40.

"I can’t see why not, as long as I look after myself and I don’t carry too much weight," said the 37-year-old. "As long as I feel I can still do it, why can’t I play until I’m 40?

"People would have watched that game and my CV will go out and hopefully someone will need a bit of experience, whether it be as a first-team keeper or at a higher level as a bit of back-up."
