Ch Insp Ferguson: exciting challenge

A new style police team has been given the task of protecting the Channel Tunnel rail network from crime, including terrorist attacks, drug trafficking and illegal immigration.

Chief Insp Theresa Ferguson, 46, has been put in charge of the Ashford-based unit, which is part of British Transport Police.

Her 24-strong force will eventually build up to 100 officers at key stations along the 65-mile stretch of high-speed track from London to the Kent coast.

Her team will link with top security bodies and serious crime agencies from France and Belgium as well as Britain.

Ch Insp Ferguson, who is married with two children, was once a senior manager at Ashford’s former National Police Training Centre.

Her team will be backed by specials, PCSOs, station staff, community wardens, volunteers and residents.

Ch Insp Ferguson said: “This is a very exciting challenge for me and one I will take on with the determination to provide the best service for all who work, travel and live near the gateway route to Europe.”
